Wax coating is regularly used in synthetic surfaces in equestrian arenas and on racetracks in the UK however the specific make-up of this component of the surface can significantly alter its behaviour during different seasons and wax composition can change over time. The wax broadly consists of paraffin, microcrystalline wax and hydrocarbon oils. Wax composition can be calculated using gas chromatography. Further understanding of the thermal behaviour of the wax can be conducted using differential scanning calorimetry.
