OBST (in-situ functional properties testing)

£POA

The functional properties of a surface, as defined in the Equine Surfaces White Paper can be measured on site using the Orono Biomechanical Surface Tester (OBST). This equipment simulates the impact and loading phase of a horse during landing and can provide information on impact firmness, cushioning, responsiveness and grip. For any equestrian surface the OBST is also used to assess the spatial variability, so if there are issues in certain parts of an arena for instance the OBST can be used to measure how large that difference is. The equipment can be useful for developing initial baseline information and then this can be compared to different preparation methods, alterations in the surface over time or other changes in the conditions of the surface, such as changes in temperature or moisture content.
